Why we built this

The idea for PassportPhotoMake came from a genuinely annoying experience: needing a passport photo urgently before an early-morning visa appointment, finding the local pharmacy closed, and paying nearly $20 at the only open print shop — for two small prints that took 90 seconds to produce. The whole thing felt like an unnecessary tax on a process that was already stressful enough.

The frustrating part wasn't the cost — it was realising that nothing about a passport photo technically requires a studio. Every requirement is documented: the exact size in millimeters, the head height as a percentage of the frame, the background colour, the expression. Any decent phone camera can capture it. The crop and resize is trivial software. We built this tool so that anyone with a smartphone and a plain wall never has to overpay for a passport photo again.

What we do

PassportPhotoMake is a free, browser-based tool that guides you through taking and cropping a compliant passport or visa photo. Upload your photo, pick your country, adjust the crop, remove or change the background, and download a print-ready file — all in your browser, in under two minutes. We support official presets for the US, UK, India, Canada, Australia, the Schengen area, and dozens more countries.

Beyond the main tool, we maintain a library of practical guides on everything from what size a passport photo needs to be, to acceptable background colours, to why photos get rejected and how to fix them. We reference official government guidance and update guides when requirements change.

Our editorial approach

We aim to keep our guides accurate and up to date by referencing official government sources — such as the US Department of State and UK His Majesty's Passport Office — wherever possible. We link to primary sources so you can verify requirements yourself. If you spot an error or an outdated specification, please let us know — an incorrect photo can cost you a visa application.

Privacy by design

Your photos never leave your device. All processing — cropping, background removal, resizing, sheet generation, and download — runs locally in your browser using your device's own CPU and GPU. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Nothing is stored. This isn't a marketing claim; it's a technical constraint we deliberately chose to build around. Read more in our Privacy Policy.

Independent & not a government service

We are an independent tool and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any government agency, passport authority, or official ID issuer. Always verify your final photo against your country's current official requirements before submitting it. Requirements change — especially head size rules and background specifications — and the issuing authority's guidance is always the definitive source.
