What stays the same as an adult photo

• Same dimensions for the country — 2 x 2 in in the US, 35 x 45 mm in most others.
• Plain white or light background with no shadows.
• The face must be centred and in focus, looking towards the camera.
• No other people, hands, toys, dummies, or props visible in the shot.

What is relaxed for babies

• Newborns do not need their eyes open, and a neutral expression is not required.
• Babies do not need to look directly at the lens, though it helps.
• The mouth can be open. Pacifiers and bottles, however, must be removed.

Easy ways to take the shot

Lay the baby on a plain white sheet or blanket and photograph straight down from above — this gives an even background and no shadows.

Alternatively, cover a car seat with a white sheet and photograph the baby reclined in it.

Use soft, natural daylight rather than direct flash to avoid red-eye and harsh shadows.
