Passport photo vs visa photo: what is the difference?

When they are the same

Many countries use the same 35 x 45 mm photo for both passports and visas, so a single photo works for both.

The US visa photo and US passport photo are both 2 x 2 in (51 x 51 mm) on a white background — identical specifications.

When they differ

India is the classic example: Indian passport photos are 35 x 45 mm, but a US visa for an Indian applicant needs a 2 x 2 in square.

A visa is set by the destination country, so a 35 x 45 mm passport holder applying for a US visa must switch to 2 x 2 in.

Always match the photo size to the specific application you are filling in, not just your nationality.
