What size is a passport photo?
A passport size photo is a small, close-up portrait used for passports, visas, and ID documents. The exact size depends on the country that issues the document.
In the United States, a passport photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) — a square. Most other countries, including the UK, Australia, India, and the Schengen area, use a 35 x 45 mm rectangle. Canada uses 50 x 70 mm.
Standard passport photo sizes
- United States — 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), square.
- United Kingdom — 35 x 45 mm.
- India — 35 x 45 mm (Indian visas use 2 x 2 in / 51 x 51 mm).
- Canada — 50 x 70 mm.
- Australia — 35 x 45 mm.
- Schengen / EU — 35 x 45 mm.
- China — 33 x 48 mm.
How much of the photo should the head fill?
Beyond the overall dimensions, every country specifies how large your head should appear. For US photos, the head must measure 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) from chin to crown — about 50–69% of the photo height.
For 35 x 45 mm photos, the head typically fills 70–80% of the frame (around 32–36 mm from chin to crown). Our photo maker shows a head-position guide so you crop it correctly every time.
What resolution do I need?
For printing, aim for 300 DPI. At 300 DPI a 2 x 2 inch US photo is 600 x 600 pixels, and a 35 x 45 mm photo is about 413 x 531 pixels. Our tool exports at print resolution automatically.
