Can you wear glasses in a passport photo?

In the United States, you cannot wear glasses in a passport photo — the rule has been in effect since November 2016, except in rare documented medical cases. Other countries allow prescription glasses only if your eyes are fully visible with no glare or tint.

Glasses rules by country

United States — no glasses at all (remove them before taking the photo).

UK, Australia, Canada, Schengen/EU — prescription glasses allowed only if eyes are clearly visible, frames do not cover the eyes, and there is no glare or reflection.

Tinted or photochromic lenses and sunglasses are never allowed.

Best practice

Remove your glasses for the photo whenever possible. It guarantees compliance and avoids reflections that cause rejections.
