How to take a passport photo at home
You do not need a studio to take a passport photo. With a smartphone, a plain wall, and good daylight, you can take a compliant photo at home and crop it to size in this tool.
How to take a passport photo at home with your phone
- 1
Find a plain wall
Stand about 0.5 m in front of a plain white or light-grey wall to avoid shadows.
- 2
Use soft daylight
Face a window so light falls evenly on your face. Avoid direct sun and harsh overhead lights.
- 3
Set up the phone
Place the iPhone or Android phone at eye level on a stand or have someone hold it about 1–1.5 m away. Use the rear camera for better quality.
- 4
Frame and shoot
Keep a neutral expression, look straight at the lens, and capture your head and the top of your shoulders.
- 5
Crop to passport size
Upload the photo here, choose your country preset, and crop, then clean up the background and download.
How to take a passport photo with an iPhone
- Use the rear camera (not the selfie camera) for sharper detail and no distortion.
- Turn off Portrait mode — the blurred background is not accepted. Use normal Photo mode.
- Hold the phone at eye level and keep it parallel to your face so your features are not distorted.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Shadows behind the head from standing too close to the wall.
- Uneven lighting that brightens one side of the face.
- Tilting the head or camera, or smiling with teeth where a neutral expression is required.
