Iceland passport photo requirements
Icelandic passport photos must be 35 x 45 mm — the biometric standard. The background must be plain light grey or white, the expression neutral, and the head must fill 70–80% of the frame. Iceland's passport authority follows ICAO biometric guidelines, the same standard used across the Schengen area.
Applications are submitted through the District Commissioner's Office (Sýslumaður). Getting your photo right the first time means no extra trips or delays.
How to take a compliant Iceland passport photo at home
- 1
Choose a plain background
Stand in front of a plain white or light-grey wall. Natural daylight from a window to the side — not behind you — avoids shadows.
- 2
Photograph yourself front-facing
Have someone take the shot at eye level from about 1–2 metres. Your full face and shoulders should be visible.
- 3
Crop to 35 x 45 mm
In the free passport photo maker, choose Iceland (35 x 45 mm) and use the face guide to fill 70–80% of the frame height with your head.
- 4
Set a compliant background
Use the background removal tool and choose light grey to meet the Icelandic biometric standard.
- 5

Iceland — a unique photo consideration
Iceland has a very high rate of smartphone use and most applicants photograph themselves at home before uploading. The most common rejection reason is shadows caused by bright indoor lighting or a patterned background.
Because Icelandic surnames are patronymic and the population is small, passport authorities can sometimes flag photos that look significantly different from a previous passport — so use natural, unfiltered lighting.
Where to apply for an Icelandic passport
Icelandic passport applications are submitted in person at a Sýslumaður (District Commissioner) office across Iceland, or at Icelandic embassies and consulates abroad. Bring two printed 35 x 45 mm photos unless you are using the digital submission option.
