Luxembourg passport photo requirements
Luxembourg passport photos must be 35 x 45 mm with a plain light-grey or white background — the EU biometric standard. Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union and the Schengen area, so its photo requirements follow the same ICAO guidelines used by France, Germany, and the rest of the EU.
Passport applications in Luxembourg are handled by the Communes (local administrations) or the Agence Luxembourgeoise de Passeport et Visas. Having a correct photo on hand makes the application straightforward.
How to take a compliant Luxembourg passport photo at home
- 1
Use a plain, light-coloured wall
Stand in front of a plain light-grey or white wall in good natural light — daylight from the side gives even, shadow-free results.
- 2
Shoot straight-on at eye level
Ask someone to photograph you front-facing from about 1–2 metres. Your full face and the top of your shoulders should be in the frame.
- 3
Crop to 35 x 45 mm
Upload to the free passport photo maker, choose Luxembourg (35 x 45 mm), and position your head to fill 70–80% of the frame height.
- 4
Apply a light-grey background
Click "Remove Background" in the tool and select light grey — the preferred backdrop for Luxembourg biometric photos.
- 5
Download and print
Export at 300 DPI, print on photo paper, and cut to 35 x 45 mm. Two printed photos are typically required for in-person applications.

Luxembourg and the EU/Schengen photo standard
Because Luxembourg is a Schengen member, its passport photo rules are harmonised with the EU biometric standard. A photo made for a Luxembourg passport is therefore also valid for Schengen visa applications and vice versa.
Luxembourg has three official languages — French, German, and Luxembourgish — but photo requirements are identical regardless of which administrative channel you use.
Applying for a Luxembourg passport
Luxembourg passports can be applied for at your local Commune office or, for Luxembourg residents abroad, at a Luxembourg embassy or consulate. Bring two printed 35 x 45 mm photos, a valid identity document, and proof of Luxembourg nationality.
Processing times for a standard passport are typically 2–4 weeks. Emergency travel documents are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEE) in Luxembourg City.
