Norway passport photo requirements
Norwegian passport photos must be 35 x 45 mm (approximately 1.38 x 1.77 inches) — the standard biometric size used across Europe. The photo must have a plain light-grey or white background, a neutral expression, and the face must fill 70–80% of the frame.
Whether you are applying for a new passport at a police station or renewing online through the Norwegian Police Service (Politiet), using the correct photo the first time saves you the hassle of returning for a re-shoot.
How to take a compliant Norway passport photo at home
- 1
Set up against a plain wall
Stand against a plain white or light-grey wall in good, even natural light. Avoid windows directly behind you that cause shadows.
- 2
Frame your face correctly
Ask someone to take the photo at eye level, about 1–2 metres away. Your full face and top of the shoulders should be in frame.
- 3
Upload and crop to 35 x 45 mm
Use the free passport photo maker, choose Norway (35 x 45 mm), and position the face guide so your head fills 70–80% of the frame.
- 4
Remove or swap the background
Click "Remove Background" in the tool and select light grey — the colour required by the Norwegian passport office.
- 5
Download and print or submit digitally
Download your photo at 300 DPI, print it on photo paper or upload it directly to the online passport application.

- Expression: Neutral — mouth closed, both eyes open, looking directly at the camera.
- Head coverings: Not allowed unless worn daily for religious or medical reasons; full face must remain visible.
- Glasses: No sunglasses or tinted lenses. Clear prescription glasses are generally discouraged.
- Recency: Photo must have been taken within the last six months.

Common reasons Norwegian passport photos are rejected
- Wrong background colour — a pure white background is acceptable, but a background with shadows or texture is not.
- Head too small or too large — the face must cover 70–80% of the frame height.
- Shadows on the face or background caused by poor lighting or standing too close to the wall.
- Hair covering the eyes or face edges making measurement impossible.
- Wearing glasses, even clear ones, as modern biometric systems flag them.
- Unnatural or smiling expression — a relaxed neutral face is required.
Norway passport application — where to submit your photo
Norwegian passport applications are handled by the police (Politiet). You can apply at your local police station or, for renewals, use the Politiet online portal where you upload a digital photo directly.
Emergency passports are issued at the main Politiet offices in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, and Trondheim. In these cases bring two printed 35 x 45 mm photos.
