Pakistan passport photo size & requirements

Pakistani passport photos are 35 x 45 mm with a plain white background and the head filling most of the frame.

Pakistan issues its biometric Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) and the newer e-Passport through the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). The photo format — 35 x 45 mm with a plain white background and the head filling 70–80% of the frame — follows the ICAO biometric standard. Both the Pakistani passport and the Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) use the same photo format, which means a compliant passport photo will also work for CNIC renewal at NADRA offices.

Pakistan has specific rules for women wearing a hijab: the full face from chin to crown and from ear to ear must be completely visible. The hijab cannot cast a shadow on the face, and the face must be the only part covered — neck scarves that extend over the chin are not acceptable. Pakistan also requires the photo to show a neutral expression with the mouth closed, and photos with even the faintest hint of a smile are routinely returned. NADRA's biometric verification system is used across multiple government services, making photo quality consistency important beyond just the passport itself.

Common reasons Pakistan passport photos get rejected

Even a technically correct photo can be turned away for these issues. They come up repeatedly in official rejection notices.

  • Background not plain white or with any shadow behind the subject — DGIP offices are strict about this, and photos with even subtle background gradients are returned.
  • Smile or non-neutral expression — even a very slight smile is a common rejection reason at Pakistani passport offices.
  • Hijab casting a shadow on any part of the face — the full face must be uniformly lit with no shadowing from the head covering.
  • Prescription glasses with glare or tinted lenses — clear glasses are permitted only if there is no reflection on the lenses.
  • Photo not taken within the last six months, or one where appearance has changed significantly.
  • Poor print quality — photos on standard paper or printed at low resolution (below 300 DPI) are rejected.
