Thailand passport photo size & requirements

Thai passport photos are 35 x 45 mm with a plain white or light-blue background and the head filling 70–80% of the frame.

Thailand issues its biometric passport (หนังสือเดินทาง) through the Department of Consular Affairs (กรมการกงสุล) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applications are processed at the Department's main office in Bangkok and at provincial passport offices across the country. The photo format — 35 x 45 mm with the head filling 70–80% of the frame — is the standard ICAO biometric format. Thailand is one of the few countries that officially accepts either a white or a light-blue background for passport photos, giving applicants a choice that most other countries do not offer.

Thai passport applications in person require the biometric photo to be taken on-site at the passport office — the Department of Consular Affairs has live-capture equipment. Applicants do not bring their own photos for in-person new passport applications. However, Thai nationals renewing from abroad through Thai embassies and consulates must provide two 35 x 45 mm printed photos. Additionally, foreign nationals applying for Thai visas through Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates abroad must submit photos with their visa application — the Thai embassy in each country may specify either a white or light-blue background, so check the specific embassy's requirements.

Thailand passport photo requirements

  • Photo must be 35 x 45 mm for Thai passport and visa applications.
  • Plain white or light-blue background with no patterns.
  • Front view, neutral expression, eyes open and clearly visible.
  • No uniforms; everyday clothing that contrasts with the background.

Common reasons Thailand passport photos get rejected

Even a technically correct photo can be turned away for these issues. They come up repeatedly in official rejection notices.

  • Background that is neither white nor light blue — any other colour, including very light grey (which is standard in Europe), is not specified for Thai passports and may be rejected.
  • Uniforms in the photo — Thai passport regulations specifically prohibit wearing a uniform, including military, police, or occupational uniforms.
  • Head covering not for documented religious or medical reasons — Buddhist monks and nuns are not permitted to wear robes in passport photos (they must appear in lay clothing).
  • Glasses with glare or tinted lenses.
  • Photo taken with harsh or uneven lighting that alters the natural skin tone.
  • Photo more than six months old that does not reflect current appearance.
