Turkey uses a 50 x 60 mm photo format for its biometric passport (biyometrik pasaport) and national identity card (Nüfus Cüzdanı / TC Kimlik Kartı), both of which are issued by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs (Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü, NVİ) under the Ministry of Interior. This format is larger than the 35 x 45 mm standard used across Europe and most of Asia, and is one of the less common formats globally. The extra size means there is more context visible in the photo — the frame includes more of the upper shoulders — which is deliberate for the Turkish biometric system's facial recognition parameters.
Turkey applies a strict plain white background requirement — light grey, cream, or any other background is not accepted. The head must be centred in the frame and fill approximately 60–72% of the photo height, which works out to about 36–43 mm from chin to crown in the larger format. Turkish passport photos are submitted at NVİ offices (Nüfus Müdürlüğü) across Turkey, where staff take a live-capture biometric photo on-site. For Turkish nationals abroad, photos are required at Turkish consulates for passport and identity document applications, and the 50 x 60 mm specification must be met.

Common reasons Turkey passport photos get rejected
Even a technically correct photo can be turned away for these issues. They come up repeatedly in official rejection notices.
- Submitting a 35 x 45 mm photo instead of the 50 x 60 mm format — this is the most common mistake for Turkish nationals abroad whose local photo services default to the European standard.
- Background that is not plain white — even a very light grey is not accepted for Turkish biometric documents.
- Head not centred in the larger frame — the 50 x 60 mm format has more space, and heads that are off-centre or positioned too low in the frame are rejected.
- Glasses with any glare or coloured lenses.
- Photo taken within six months requirement — Turkish NVİ officers check that the photo reflects current appearance.
- Photo printed on non-photographic paper or at low resolution.
